New York Knicks forward Wilson Chandler, who had ankle and sports hernia surgeries since the season ended in mid-April, has been working out at the team’s training facility and says his recovery is going well. He will be with the Knicks’ summer league team in Las Vegas next month but doesn’t plan on playing in any games.
“Everything has been going pretty good,” Chandler said from his courtside seat at the Liberty-Sun game at The Garden on Sunday. “I’ve been in the gym every morning for about three hours on an average day. I will be going to Vegas to workout with the team.”
Although Chandler hasn’t been doing any on-court basketball activities, he is able to run after undergoing a procedure to remove scar tissue in his left ankle on April 14 and another to repair a sports hernia on May 14. He has also been spending time in the weight room and working out in the pool.
Several of the Knicks’ returning players have also been working out in New York during the offseason. Chandler says Toney Douglas, Bill walker and Eddy Curry are “working hard every day” at the training facility. Those players along with Danilo Gallinari are under contract for next season.
This isn’t the first time Chandler has had to overcome offseason surgery. Last summer, Chandler had surgery to remove bone spurs on the same ankle. He arrived to training camp 100 percent healthy and went on to put up the best numbers of his career before sitting out the final 15 games with a groin injury.
Chandler averaged 15.3 points and 5.4 rebounds in 2009-10.
